With the 1st Jean-Luc Ponty models progressing nicely through the spray booth . . . we thought this a good time to give a listen to Jean-Luc . . .

"I chose to play this piece because it's specifically for solo violin, and I play through all ranges, from the low string to very high notes on the E-string, which gives a great overall sound sample of the new reissue model ....so it shows how good ZETA's new preamp is." Jean-Luc Ponty

Meeting Jean-Luc Ponty was fantastic! What a gracious and genuine nice guy. Having the opportunity to venture with him into his personal recording studio was incredible . . . listening to him play-test the two reissue models I had brought with me . . . and compare them both with his original JLP signature model . . . that was both exciting and unnerving at the same time!

All told we spent a couple hours discussing instrument details, playing and comparing, etc.

In the end . . . receiving his nod to the 'SOUND', and the go ahead for the 'Jean-Luc Ponty' signature model and JLP Jazz Reissue preamp . . . well that was unreal! . . . and one of those moments you long remember.

ZETA's first contact with Jean-Luc Ponty was made in December of 2014. Mr. Ponty was glad to see that ZETA was back in business and genuinely intrigued with the prospect of reissuing his signature model.

As mentioned earlier (kismet) . . . things really began to take shape when Gabe showed up at our ZETA Violins shop on the exact same day that Mr. Ponty emailed me about the 'strange coincidence' that Gabe (whom he knew well), and his original 1992 ZETA Jazz Fusion violin, was in Montana skiing and planning to stop by the ZETA shop.

'The project' gained momentum at that point and as it progressed Mr. Ponty remained in the loop, contributing his opinions along the way . . . ie, the imbus neck, coloring, etc . . . and providing invaluable feedback regarding sound tests and recordings we made.

Fast forward to April; now it was time to show Jean-Luc the '92 reissue model in person . . . and we were off to Europe . . . then Paris.

With sound tests complete . . . preamp prototyping was over. It was time to plan and schedule a trip to . . . oh I don't know . . . Paris perhaps!

In the meantime . . . let's make some parts and start building the '92 Reissue models.

Still miles to go before we rest.

It was late afternoon March 21, 2015 and the 3rd phase of ZETA's '92 Jazz Fusion Reissue project was close to completion . . . just one more tune.

A big thank you to Gabe, James and Craig for all the sound tests and comparisons . . . and their great playing!

Last up:

"New Country" . . . by Jean-Luc Ponty

By the time lunch rolled around we had two Charlie Parker tunes successfully recorded. Following a quick bite and rest break it was back to the task at hand.

Next up:

Early morning Friday, March 20th, what would hopefully be the final round of prototype preamp comparisons began in earnest. It was going to be a hectic 2 days. Blind testing was conducted using the reissue Jazz Fusions (each with differing versions of the preamp) and Gabe's original 1992 ZETA. After several hours of listening, note taking, swapping players, listening, etc. . . . consensus was reached and ZETA's '92 (JLP) Jazz Reissue preamp was 'locked-in'.

Following lunch . . . practice for the upcoming recording session began. James and Gabe had just met for the 2nd time so the afternoon was devoted to practicing the chosen tunes and getting used to each others playing style.

Later in the afternoon we headed off to Craig Halls' to practice with the guitar. It was a long afternoon . . . quite fun really . . . but lonnnnnng.

On Saturday morning we were ready to start recording. I don't believe anyone was happy with my suggestion to leave Jean-Luc Ponty's 'New Country' to record last. By the time we got to it I understood why.

We recorded 4 tunes in total and this was the first:

Billie's Bounce . . . by Charlie Parker

'The Reveal'. On Thursday, March 19th, Gabe Gladstein flew into Bozeman, Montana for a 3-day sound test and recording session with James Schlender and Craig Hall. Gabe had entrusted me with his 1992 ZETA Jazz Fusion 5-string and I hoped our reissue of his instrument . . . Jean-Luc Ponty's original . . . would not disappoint. ... See MoreSee Less

Resurrecting and relaunching the physical appearance of the '92 Reissue Jazz Fusion is pretty fundamental . . . given our 30+ years experience of doing exactly that. One might think the original 'Imbus' style neck would be the next logical step . . . but no . . . although integral to the classic look and feel of the '92 Jazz Fusion . . . it is in the end . . . just a neck. Body construction would be next.

The 2nd phase of the project recognized that 'the sound' is not totally dictated by the preamp only. The classic '92 models were made as a sandwich with eastern hard maple top and back on both sides of the body core wood. Additionally . . . the original Jazz bridge was floating on posts above the top. Parameters tested in the 2nd phase included:

• Maple top and back bodies (like originals) . . . it was interesting to note that the 'tap tone' of these bodies is decidedly different than non-sandwiched bodies
• One control body made with current 'bridge-foot' setting on top styling, and a 2nd control body with 'post-type' bridge support (like originals)
• Both bodies had double fiddle edge trim (like originals)
• 2nd round prototype 'Reissue/JLP' preamps made with higher quality components (maintaining same original mechanics) and 'alternative' versions made with 'other' component options (ie non-FET, etc)

It was anticipated at the time that these two instruments . . . when completed . . . would further capture and hone in on the sound, feel and aesthetics of the original ZETA Jazz Fusions . . . and provide the platform for final testing and demo videos made available for opinion(s) and feedback.

. . . but, as you might imagine, there were some options along this path so we needed some serious testing and discerning ears along the way.

To make sure we were on the right track . . . the early prototype '92 preamp versions, once ready, were tested in our standard Jazz Fusion models.

Thank you James and Gabe . . . and everyone else who gave an ear during this phase.

Executing projects like 'Journey Forward' happens to be one of my favorite . . . aaahhhh . . . pastimes. Organizing and laying out the steps to get there, thinking thru and analyzing the what if's and probably not's, asking questions, answering questions and well . . . just pushing forward.

With Gabe's '92 ZETA in hand we were ready to get started with the 1st phase . . . . 'The Sound'. Getting this right would be the bigger challenge and most important element of the reissue project.

Fortunately . . . being ZETA . . . we have the original wiring schematics and thus . . . the perfect starting point . . .

Welcome ZETA artist Gabe Gladstein, an accomplished jazz/fusion electric violinist from California. Gabe is a long-time ZETA player and discerning ZETA enthusiast. Perhaps many of you have followed his YouTube channel.

I first met Gabe on a pivotal Monday morning . . . January 5, 2015 to be exact. I say pivotal because our chance meet-up at the ZETA shop in Montana served to launch me enthusiastically into ZETA's latest journey. I've dubbed it the 'Journey Forward . . . to 1992'. Ever since we re-launched ZETA I have been wanting to revisit the 1992 era of ZETA violins. The classic LOOK and details of the '92 Jazz Fusion . . . and the SOUND.

Obviously . . . for some of you . . . I refer to Jean-Luc Ponty's classic original ZETA 1992 Jazz Fusion 5-string instrument. And to my good fortune, who'd of thunk . . . Gabe happens to own this beautiful historic instrument, yes . . . the exact instrument that Jean-Luc recorded over 6 albums with during the 90's and beyond. Fortunately, Gabe and I shared the same passion for reviving this instrument . . . and so, on that day in early January, the journey began.

Nick PaolellaThis is awesome! I am a huge fan of the Zeta "Jazz Standard" from the early 90's (at least that's what I believe it was called before it evolved into the "Jazz Fusion" later in the 90's), and I have actually come across a few of Gabe's videos on YouTube recently, so it was really cool to see this video posted today on Zeta's Facebook page. (Gabe - you're extremely talented by the way - if I didn't know it was you playing, I'm not sure I would be able to distinguish your sound from that of Jean-Luc!) It's funny you mentioned your "journey forward to 1992", because I was not only extremely excited when I saw that Zeta re-launched last year, but I was also recently even thinking of contacting you guys to see if you would be able to build a Jazz Fusion with the old-school headstock with the hex tuners (such as the one Gabe is playing here)...and lo and behold, this showed up on my news feed today. I have a Zeta Fusion that was built in the early 2000's, but always wanted one with the old school hex tuners/headstock. I'm also a big fan of Jean-Luc Ponty and the sound he created from this violin in the late 80's/early 90's, and Charlie Bisharat was the violinist who inspired me to play the violin after hearing him in John Tesh's "Live at Red Rocks" concert back in the mid 90's, playing his custom Jazz Standard/Fusion. So excited that Zeta is back, and what you guys have been doing to revive it and make it seemingly better than ever!
